What is Sterling Silver?
Sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% by mass of silver and 7.5% by mass of other metals, usually copper. The sterling silver standard has a minimum millesimal fineness of 925.
Fine silver (99.9% pure) is generally too soft for producing functional objects; therefore, the silver is usually alloyed with copper to give it strength while preserving the ductility and beauty of the precious metal. Other metals can replace the copper, usually with the intent to improve various properties of the basic sterling alloy such as reducing casting porosity, eliminating firescale, and increasing resistance to tarnish. When sterling silver becomes tarnished it is referred to as 'oxidized' -in recent years this look has become popular in it's own right and many jewelry designers now deliberately oxidized their silver jewelry pieces to acheive this look. How to clean it? Cleaning tarnished or oxidized sterling silver jewelry is a relatively simple task and can be accomplished with many household items. Toothpaste will work beautifully on tarnished sterling silver jewelry but it is abbrasive and sticky so I would not recommend it for items that have fine detail work or soft gemstones as they may become damaged. Alternately you can line the bottom of the sink or a dishpan with tin foil, and fill with hot water. Add some salt and baking soda. Proportions aren't critical here, just throw in a couple teaspoons of each. Next, put the sterling silver jewelry into the water, with the pieces touching each other and the tin foil. The tarnish will be pulled off the silver to the foil - in cases of heavy tarnish, you will be able to see it flaking off. Leave in for no more than five minutes, rinse and dry.
What is Gold Fill?
Gold filled is an actual layer of gold-pressure bonded to another metal. Gold filled is not to be confused with gold plating as filled literally has 100% more gold than gold plating. Gold filled is much more valuable and tarnish resistant. It does not flake off, rub off or turn colors. As a matter of fact, anyone who can wear gold can wear gold filled without worries of any allergic reaction to the jewelry. Gold filled jewelry is an economical alternative to solid gold!
Gold filled jewelry is made from solid gold and filled with other alloys such as rhodium (a member of the platinum family), brass, and sterling silver. Gold filled wears, looks and lasts like solid gold because its outer surface IS solid gold. Everything you can see and touch is pure gold.
Gold-Filled items are generally considered lifetime products, and the gold layer will not wear off, as it will in electroplated products.
